The Power of Community Engagement

Community Events

This summer, I had the pleasure of attending Middle Smithfield Township’s 5th Annual Community Day at Echo Lake Park!

It was wonderful to see so many families, local organizations, and volunteers come together to celebrate what makes our community special. Events like this don’t just happen — they’re made possible by teamwork, dedication, and countless volunteer hours from people who truly care about Middle Smithfield.

As a “from here, for here” resident and your candidate for Township Supervisor, I believe community events like this are the heart of who we are — neighbors supporting neighbors, building connections, and creating memories that remind us why Middle Smithfield is such a great place to live.

THINK PINK! 💗
I also caught up with Betty Ann Ricci and her amazing team from 1000 Pink Lights, who were there representing their incredible local effort to support breast cancer awareness and patients right here in our area.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — so let’s show our support and join Betty for the 1000 Pink Lights Walk next Saturday at Lehman Park.

Just finished knocking doors. It’s been a great week going door to door, connecting with old friends and making new ones right here in Middle Smithfield Township.
Tonight I visited with Wooddale United Methodist Church, where I caught up with Robin Cramer Dillon as she and the team were getting ready for their Annual Fall Yard & Bake Sale. Robin went to school with my sister Martha — small world, and one of the many reasons I love living here.

🌿 Supporting Dementia-Friendly Communities 🌿
I’ve known Barbara Van Nortwick my whole life — she and my late mom shared a lifelong passion for improving the lives of others, Barbara as a Certified Dementia Practitioner, and my mom as an occupational therapist. Barbara continues that work today as Co-Founder of the Monroe County Dementia Coalition and Conni’s Café, the first Memory Café in Monroe County. I am proud to support Barbara’s event today as a journal sponsor.
Barbara’s mission is both compassionate and practical: to make Monroe County a Dementia-Friendly Community, like Lackawanna County, where understanding and inclusion shape every interaction.
As Barbara reminds us, dementia care isn’t about doing to or for someone — it’s about doing with them. By recognizing each person’s remaining abilities and strengths, we can truly change the journey for individuals and families affected by dementia.
